Investigations
The VCU Police Department has a dedicated team of detectives who investigate certain crimes on VCU’s Monroe Park and MCV Campuses. Depending on the circumstances of an incident, an investigator may immediately be involved in a case, or may be brought in to follow up on a report made to the department’s patrol division.
VCU Police detectives are authorized to conduct investigations and make arrests for criminal incidents occurring within VCU Police jurisdiction. These incidents include:
- Larceny / Theft
- Property Damage
- Motor Vehicle Theft
- Burglary / Breaking & Entering
- Robbery
- Sexual Assault
- Aggravated Assault
- Non-Suspicious Deaths
Criminal incidents may be investigated by another law enforcement agency, depending on the exact location of the crime and the circumstances. VCU Police detectives routinely collaborate with local, state and federal law enforcement partners and will provide assistance for investigations occurring within, or outside, VCU Police jurisdiction.
The department takes all threats and reports of violence very seriously, including those made on social media platforms. VCU Police leadership and detectives serve on VCU’s Threat Assessment Team, which evaluates potentially dangerous situations on campus and responds as appropriate. The team consists of representatives from VCU Police, Human Resources, University Counseling Services, Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Services, Office of the General Counsel and other units as determined.
The VCU Police Victim / Witness Program is part of the investigations unit. Survivors of sexual assault and victims of crime will meet with a specially-trained, victim/witness officer and will be connected to the department’s victim/witness coordinator to assist with resources and next steps.
