Sell Safe
People nationwide have been scammed, and robbed, after trying to sell items on Craigslist and similar websites. Due to this, and the popularity of these sites, VCU Police offers a safe space for sales and exchanges.
The department encourages students, faculty and staff to meet potential buyers and sellers at VCU Police headquarters. While the websites themselves are not dangerous – criminals will use the sites to scam and victimize others.
VCU Police headquarters is located at 224 E. Broad Street in downtown Richmond and can be accessed by taking the Convention Center GRTC Pulse stops. The facility is staffed 24 hours each day and the vestibule at the Broad Street entrance is air conditioned and open to the public. Visitor and bike parking is available in the parking lot behind the building.
When selling (or buying) an item online, choose a public meetup spot with safety in mind. Somewhere that is open, visible, and preferably populated is ideal. Bring a friend with you to feel more comfortable.
Remember, if you are selling or buying an item online, and the buyer or seller won’t meet you at VCU Police headquarters, or another police station, something may be wrong. Trust your instincts and put your safety first.
No prior reservations need to be made with VCU Police in order to meet in the Broad Street vestibule.
