General
The mission of the VCU Police Department (VCUPD) is to provide a safe and secure learning, living, and working environment for the students, faculty, staff, and visitors of VCU. This will be accomplished through the development of various community-based crime prevention strategies and initiatives in conjunction with traditional law enforcement and progressive community policing practices. All members of the department shall provide the highest levels of courtesy and customer service to the community.
Accountability Statement
All employees are expected to fully comply with the guidelines and timelines set forth in this written directive. Failure to comply will result in appropriate corrective action. Responsibility rests with the division commander to ensure that any violations of policy are investigated and appropriate training, counseling and/or disciplinary action is initiated.
Standard Departmental Goals and Objectives
The specific goals and objectives of the department are as follows:
- Deter, reduce, and suppress crime using creative and innovative community policing strategies.
- Foster partnerships with other law enforcement agencies, both local, state and federal, and utilize these relationships to maximize the effectiveness of VCUPD.
- Increase the public perception of safety on campus and in the surrounding communities.
- Aid and assist all members of the university community, as well as those communities and neighborhoods surrounding the VCU campus.
- Assist students, faculty and staff with various requests, to include police and non-police related services.
- Continue the enhancement of VCUPD’s image within the VCU community.
- Identify and suppress emerging threats that could potentially jeopardize the safety of students, faculty, staff, or visitors.
- Maintain a readiness level which provides VCUPD with the ability to rapidly respond to any law enforcement incident.
Establishment of Annual Work Plan
- The standard department Goals and Objectives shall be reviewed on an annual basis and made available to all personnel.
- All personnel shall have input in the development of specific strategies within the annual work plan. Participation will be required of employees through their command structure.
- The Chief’s Office shall prepare an annual work plan based upon the standard Goals and Objectives, VCU’s Quest for Distinction goals and the input provided by each division.
- Division supervisors shall track the progress of their employees in meeting the goals and work product set forth in the department work plan.
